Spinal Adjustments (Manipulation)

Manipulation of the spine and the extremities is a safe and effective way to reduce pain and address mobility issues. It involves manually applying pressure to a specific joint within the body to increase motion and movement while providing significant relief. It is often used when treating neck, upper back, low back, shoulder, hip and foot pain.

Spinal manipulation is also called spinal manipulative therapy. It’s a technique where practitioners use their hands or a device to apply a controlled thrust (that is, a force of a specific magnitude or degree in a specific direction) to a joint within the body. The amount of force can vary, but the thrust moves the joint more than it would on its own. Spinal manipulation is different from spinal mobilization, which doesn’t involve a thrust (and is performed within a joint’s natural range of motion and can be controlled by the patient).

Most spinal manipulations are done by chiropractors (chiropractic treatment often involves spinal manipulation), although other licensed professionals, including osteopathic physicians and some physical therapists also perform them.

The Safety of Spinal Adjustments

Spinal manipulation is safe and effective when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. It is not recommended that individuals attempt to self-treat themselves due to the risk of significant injury.

Benefits of Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments

Chiropractic spinal adjustments, otherwise referred to as chiropractic manipulation, is a technique that chiropractors use to treat issues with the vertebrae. Many cases of back pain do not improve through medication and physical therapy, and for many, this technique is incredibly beneficial.

By understanding the benefits of chiropractic spinal adjustments, you can determine if the procedure is appropriate for your needs. Whether you suffer from sports related injury or work-related injury or just want to improve the way you feel and function daily, a spinal adjustment may be a beneficial form of treatment -- certainly one worth considering.

Pain Relief

One of the main reasons chiropractors recommend a spinal adjustment to patients is to treat lower back pain. Many cases of lower back pain can be hard to treat since traditional medicine, such as oral medications, are not always successful. However, many find pain relief through spinal manipulation, which can reduce nerve irritability, increase range of motion and make the pain diminish as a result.

Spinal adjustment is a safe procedure that is not likely to cause any additional discomfort in the short term. The pain relief many patients receive through treatment allows them to get back to doing the things they love without fear of a sore, painful back.

Improved Function

Not only does chiropractic spinal manipulation help reduce the amount of pain one experiences, but it also works to improve the function of the joints and increase the overall range of motion. In many instances, when joint fixation occurs, it causes the muscles to become tight and joints to not be as mobile, which can make doing simple tasks such as lifting a box much more difficult. One of the main purposes of spinal manipulation is to increase the joints range of motion and improve joint mobility and movement. In doing so, the function of the back can improve and life can become much easier.

Injury Recovery

Another major benefit from spinal adjustment is that it allows for a faster recovery process following an injury. The procedure improves blood circulation, provides relief to muscles and joints, and reduces the irritability of nerves; all of these play a role in recovering from injury. Whether the person is an athlete who suffered a back injury or someone injured in a car accident, an adjustment can make the recovery process much easier.

Reduces Inflammation

Inflammation is one of the main reasons for developing muscle tension, joint issues and pain. Chiropractic adjustments have been proven to help reduce chronic inflammation, thereby relieving lower back and joint pain.
